The role of hypnosis in medicine has been evolving over the last 100 years. Currently, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States is funding clinical trials of complementary and alternative medicine. Hypnosis in medicine has been one of the focuses of this funding effort.

Hypnosis in contemporary medicine was reviewed by James H. Stewart, M. D., of the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. In this review, Dr. Stewart highlighted basic concepts of hypnosis and reviewed the results of many clinical trials of hypnosis in treating a variety of medical conditions. If you are age 65 or older, you may take more medicines now than ever before. Two-thirds of adults age 65 and older use one or more medicines each day, and a quarter of them take three drugs each day. The more you know about your medicines and the more you communicate with your health professionals, the better your chances are for avoiding possible problems with medicines. Rectogesic, a glyceryl trinitrate for rectal use, is now a pharmacist-only medicine.

The Medicines Classification Committee says pharmacists need to provide information about the interaction between Rectogesic and substances such as sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis) and vardenafil (Levitra) at the point of sale.

More needs to be done to prevent a rising tide of infections related to acupuncture, researchers from the University of Hong Kong say.
In a commentary, published online March 19 in BMJ, Patrick Woo and his colleagues stressed that “to prevent infections transmitted by acupuncture, infection control measures should be implemented, such as use of disposable needles, skin disinfection procedures, and aseptic techniques.
